On the road again!

It was time to pack up our things and get going again. Today’s goal was to drive to Fort Lauderdale. We got up at 8am, got everything ready and went to the Southernmost Denny’s for breakfast.

Tom had the Lumberjack slam, two buttermilk pancakes, a slice of grilled honey ham, two bacon strips, two sausage links and two fried eggs, plus hash browns and choice of bread, some coffee and orange juice. I had the same as the day before, the French Toast slam, two thick slices of their Fabulous French Toast with two scrambled eggs, two bacon strips and two sausage links, some tea and some orange juice.

After a short stroll along Duval Street we went back to the Hibiscus Motel, loaded our car and checked out. By time we left Key West it was already 10.45 and we started to drive towards the main land again. This time the weather was much better and we were able to stop at Bahia Honda again. We parked the car and went down to the beach where we spent quite some time dipping our feet into the crystal clear water.

There weren’t even as much people as we had imagined, so it was amazing to have this wonderful piece of heaven nearly to ourselves. We spent about an hour and a half there before we got back on the road again. Most of the day was spent driving, even though we stopped a few times to have a look at some souvenir shops, but there was nothing really special in them.

It took quite some time to finally reach Fort Lauderdale in the late afternoon. We stopped in front of  the Best Western Oceanside Inn and checked in. Our room was on the second floor and even had a balcony overlooking the garden. We took all our stuff to the room, relaxed for a while and then walked to the Bubba Gump restaurant which was just down the road. Massive research on the hotels in the Bubba Gump area paid off!

Since we have never tried any of their desserts we decided against a starter and try dessert for a change. Tom got another one of the collectable glasses and I had another Strawberry Speckled Lemonade. For my main course I chose the spicy grilled shrimp, served with rice and a spicy sauce and a tomato and pineapple salsa.

This was so different from what I had ever had at Bubba Gump’s and SO good! It was a huge portion and I am proud to say that I finished it all. Tom had the Shrimper's Heaven -Coconut shrimp, chilly shrimp, fried shrimp, hush pups, fries and of course dipping sauce . I tried it and it was as good as the description sounds. Very yummy!! For our dessert we chose to share That Chocolate Thing! Their description for it is: “We're not sure what to call it, but we know you'll love it! A special jar of warm flourless Chocolate Cake, topped with Vanilla Ice Cream and Whipped Cream, and drizzled with a Raspberry Sauce.” It came in a large jar, warm cake with Vanilla Ice Cream melting into it.

To get to the cake you needed to find your way through the cream and raspberry sauce – heaven on a spoon. Plus it was the perfect dessert for that day.

It was our friend Mary Ellen’s birthday. What better way to celebrate that special day than with such a chocolaty delight. After dinner we went down to the ocean, took off our shoes and walked back to the hotel on the beach. It was such a fun way to conclude our day. When we got back to the hotel we got things ready for the next day and went to bed early as on the next day we were to drive to Orlando and check into the Port Orleans Riverside Resort to enjoy the first part of our Free Dining Vacation!
